32mm vs 34mm vs 36mm Fingerboard Decks

Width is the one spec that changes how a fingerboard feels. Here's what each size does, who rides it, and which widths HALF decks come in.

The short answer

Fingerboard decks are almost always 100mm long; width is what varies. 32mm is the modern standard for technical riding. 34mm is the balanced middle ground and the width most riders settle on. 36mm is wide, stable and the easiest to control if you're coming from Tech Deck-style boards or ride mostly rails and ledges. If you're unsure, start at 34mm.

32mm fingerboard decks

32mm was the competition standard for years and it's still what a lot of technical riders prefer. The narrow footprint means less wood to rotate, so flip tricks come around faster and the board feels light and responsive. The trade-off is landing: there's less surface to catch, so it punishes sloppy foot placement. If you ride a lot of flat-ground flip combos, 32mm is the pick.

34mm fingerboard decks

34mm is the width most people end up on. It flips nearly as fast as 32mm but lands noticeably easier, and it feels proportionate under two fingers. It's the width HALF makes to order so every design is available in it. If it's your first HALF deck and you don't already have a strong preference, get 34mm.

36mm fingerboard decks

36mm is wide. It's the most stable on rails and ledges, the most forgiving for grinds and the easiest to control if you're used to toy-store boards. Flips take a bit more effort. It's also the width that shows off a graphic best, which is why collectors who mostly display their decks lean 36mm. Note the HALF display case fits 32mm and 34mm; the upright stand fits 36mm.

Does width change the trucks or wheels?

Trucks come in widths too, usually 32mm and 34mm. A 34mm truck on a 36mm deck works fine; wheels sit slightly inboard. A 32mm truck on a 36mm deck looks narrow and feels twitchy. Match or go one step narrower on the trucks and you're fine. HALF sells decks only, so any standard trucks and wheels you already own will bolt on.

FAQ

What is the most common fingerboard deck width?

34mm. It's the middle option and the one most riders use day to day. 32mm is common among technical riders; 36mm among rail and ledge riders.

What size fingerboard deck should a beginner get?

34mm. It's the easiest to learn on without feeling oversized. If you're coming from a Tech Deck, 36mm will feel the most familiar.

Are all fingerboard decks 100mm long?

Nearly all professional decks are 96mm to 100mm. HALF decks are 100mm.

Which widths do HALF decks come in?

32mm and 36mm are stocked and ship immediately. 34mm is made to order on most designs and ships within 5 business days.

Does the raised graphic affect the ride?

No. The texture is on the top graphic only; the shape, concave and bottom of the deck are standard, so trucks mount and the board rides like any other deck.
